The Wedding Survey

I was recently tagged as a "married woman" and was asked to complete the following wedding survey. So, again, in the true form of boredom, I have decided to complete my blogging obligations. Kind of fitting with my one year anniversary coming around the corner pretty soon!

The story of:
Bret Lee Mathis
&

Mary Katherine 'Camp' Mathis

1) Did you have a traditional proposal? I am not 100% sure of the word "traditional" but my proposal was exactly how I wanted and hoped it would be, low key. Bret took me to dinner at Roadhouse on a Saturday night. I was very relaxed. I am talking jeans, t-shirt, hair in a pony tail and I was even wearing my glasses. After dinner we went on a walk around Central Park, which we have been known to do. After walking for a bit, Bret and I sat down at what we like to say is "our bench" and after talking for a few minutes he got down on his knee and asked me to marry him. I of course said "Yes!" then teared up, kissed him, enjoyed the moment and then let all the phone calls begin.

2) When was your wedding day? April 14, 2008
3) What day of the week was it? Monday afternoon

4) Church/court/other? Bret and I had two different things for this. 1) Since we were married in Mexico, Bret and I had to go to the Justice of the Peace first here in College Station for our marriage to be legalized. So we were actually married at the JP here. It might sound odd but I love the whole thing. Our JP was super friendly - He sat and visited with us first, got to know us and I enjoyed it being a very private moment between Bret and I. We didn't take any pictures to show anyone because we wanted it to be something for just the two of us to remember. I did wear a white sundress in the spirit of tradition vs. a t-shirt and jeans. 2) Bret and I had a blessing ceremony in Playa del Carmen, Mexico under a Gazebo at the Iberostar Resort which is what we consider our wedding and the actual date that we celebrate. It was here we got to share our vows with our friends and family and it was very special and fun.

5) What song played while the bride walked down the isle? To tell you the truth, I honestly have no idea. I know it was suppose to be Cannon in D because I am not a huge fan of the Wedding March but I wasn't A) listening while walking down the isle because I was so nervous and B) playing back our video I think the violinist just played something pretty - I was happy with whatever it was! I know it wasn't baby got back or something crazy so we were all good :)
6) How many was in your wedding party? We had 3 bridesmaids and 3 groomsmen - Technically I had 1 Matron of Honor, 1 Maid of Honor and 1 Bridesmaid while Bret had 1 best man and 2 groomsmen

7) How many guests were invited to your wedding? I do not really remember - I know we sent out probably around 200-300 invitations but knowing since we were getting married in Mexico they were mainly for courtesy purposes. We sent out about 50 save the date magnets well in advance to the people we felt would come to Mexico. We ended up having around 40 guests so that was a great turn out!

8) How long were you engaged? A little shy of 7 months

9) Who did you hire as your photographer/videographer? Well I had a photographer in College Station who took my bridal portraits first. I was afraid in Mexico I might not get the shots I wanted of me in my dress so I wanted to be on the safe side. The hotel we were at had professional photographers and videographers that we were able to hire. They took pictures and video of the wedding and after shots. The video is set to really cheesy music including the Lion King's "Can you feel the love tonight?" - I wouldn't trade that video for anything! I should definitely mention however that our good family friend, Sherry Nunnally, took about 3000 pictures from my bridal portraits to showers, people goofing around in Mexico to the wedding and the reception. All the pictures in fact that you are seeing on this page are from the ones she took. Without Sherry I am afraig I wouldn't have any wedding memories! Then she was amazing enough to put them in photo albums for Bret and I to have as well - It was so wonderful!

10) Did you have a DJ or a band? At the wedding ceremony we had a violinist that I thought did an excellent job and then for our reception we had a DJ. Again, both provided by the hotel.

11) Did your father walk you down the isle? Of course he did!

12) What color were the bridesmaids dresses & the groomsmen vests? My girls dresses were green and white. They wore pastel yellow shoes and earrings to match the ribbon that was wrapped around their bouquets. Bret's groomsmen were way more casual than a tux. They wore khaki pants and yellow pastel shirts. I though the bridesmaids and groomsmen all looked great together!

13) Who was the Maid of Honor/Best Man? Kara Webb was my maid of honor and Diane Summers was my Matron of Honor. Steven Brownlee was Bret's best man.

14 ) Did you have a Bridal Shower? Yes I did! In fact I had 3 Bridal showers (1 in Longview for just us girls and then 2 co-ed showers in Springtown), one Bridal Lunch and a combo bacherlorette/lingerie party! They were all super fun!

15) What type of limo did you get? Bret and I stayed at the same hotel we got married at so no transportation was needed until we were ready to head back to the airport! However, my girls and I did have a pretty sweet golf cart we got to take up to the gazebo before the wedding started!

16) Did you have Bachelor Party? Bret and I had our parties on the same weekend so that was nice to not have to be gone from each other at different times. I had my bacherlorette/lingerie party in Houston. Me and some friends stayed at Lauren Allison's house where we had dinner then headed out to Howl at the Moon. The next morning we all had breakfast and then my lingerie shower. Bret and his guys went to Austin to play golf for the day and then that night they all went out to 6th street to an array of interesting places.

17) The night before your wedding, did you sleep? Like a rock! Playing on the beach all day followed by our wedding rehearsal and dinner was pretty exhausting!
18) What type of wedding gown/tux did you two wear? My dress was a strapless, sweetheart neck dress that laced up the back - I loved it! Bret didn't wear a tux. He had khakis to match the boys and a white shirt on.

19) Did you have a veil? No. Heck No. I have never been a true "bridey" type of girl and when I was asked to try on a veil in the wedding dress place I just about had a panic attack. I had to be quickly hurried back in to my fitting room to take it off ASAP. bad. very bad.

20) What was the funniest moment from your wedding? I actually have two - 1) I didn't know about it at the time but my dad, while walking me up the isle had a small mosquito land on his cheek. So, while my dad was handing me off to Bret and giving his blessing to him, all Bret could focus on was my dad's mosquito. Later Bret told me he wanted to brush it off of dad but decided that probably wouldn't look too good, the groom slapping the father of the bride! Then 2) while taking pictures on the beach, my mother and I did a jumping picture and she proceeded to BUST IT in the sand. We even have it on our wedding video, it is great! Bret has been known to rewind and play it over and over again. Classic. There were also several funny moments from our reception but I will save those for a later date...

21) How was the weather? Beautiful and perfectly wonderful! Thank goodness since we were outside!!

22) Did your bridal party deck out the get away car? Well, we didn't have our car in Mexico but when we got back to DFW, we had left our car at a friends house so when we pulled up to their house they had decorated our car! I thought it was fun! However, we had to stop at a gas station and wash it all off before heading back to College Station because Bret couldn't see out any of the windows to drive!

23) Where did you go on your Honeymoon? Bret and I stayed in Playa del Carmen for the wedding and Honeymoon both. Everyone got there on a Saturday, we were married on a Friday, everyone was gone Tuesday-Thursday and then we were there until Saturday alone. It was really great. The resort we were at had 5 different hotels so we stayed at one while everyone else was at a completely different hotel. So we still had privacy but could also meet up and do anything we wanted with everyone else!

24) What was your favorite part of your wedding day? I would have to say the atmosphere and how relaxed everything was. Although, I must admit, I didn't think I was going to be able to eat lunch so while I was taking a shower Diane showed up to my room with nachos, hot dogs, french fries and all sorts of different food for me and her to eat. I thought that was fun getting to share that time with her - What a great Matron of Honor!

25) How long have you been married? It will be 11 months on March 14th! Getting close to our 1 year - YEAH!

26) Rings? My ring is a precision fit, solitaire, radiant diamond (which I am so in love with!) and my band has 11 round cut diamonds around the top and both are together. Bret's ring is a mix of yellow and white gold to compliment his Aggie Ring.

27) Did the bride change her name? Yes I did - I am officially Mary Katherine Mathis!
28) Any anniversary traditions? None at the moment - When April rolls around I am sure we will think of something to start. I am all about starting new traditions!
29) Anything special about the day/time of year you got married? April 2007 is when we had our first date and April 2008 was when we were married! Exactly one year - which we really loved! (April 14th was the day Lincoln was shot and the day the Titanic hit its iceberg...)
30) Words of Wisdom? Love each other every day and keep laughter in your relationship. There will be some days where you really will not like one another but it is always important to remember that no matter how mad you might be at that moment, you love each other completely and whole heartily. Find a way to laugh about the situation later - that is what gets you through the rough patches and brings you closer together.

Now for all you married ladies out there - Consider yourself officially "tagged." I want to hear all about your own Wedding in your very own, super time consuming, Wedding Survey!

That was great! I love all of the pictures and your account of everything. I want to see the wedding video and Bret is free to keep rewinding the part of your mom busting it. :) Very Cute!
