Friday night we had Bret's Christmas party for the group he is in at work, Solution Design and Delivery. We had a fun time hanging out with coworkers and getting into the Holiday spirit. We even managed to come home with a bottle of wine and a Martini Shaker set - All courtesy of the White Elephant exchange. I have decided the whole White Elephant thing is funny. People say, "Bring a $10 gift" and people just go nuts! There was an electronic dart board, a fish bowl with fake fish (which I happened to see at Walgreens today), a calendar with explicit images of married couples doing married deeds, a dip and spreader set, a coffee cup with a monkey on the front and just several other things - Scrabble, Trivia Pursuit, etc. It really is interesting to see who brings what to a party. Makes a person think ya know? A monkey cup - Honestly! Although I secretly was in love with the little guy. Secrets out now though. So, that was the Friday night.

Saturday we did NOTHING. Watched movies on TV and about 7:00pm I was getting stir crazy so I went to Target to do some Christmas shopping. Today, Sunday, mine and Bret's 8 month anniversary, was filled with TV, HEB, Barnes & Nobles, Best Buy and Walgreens. I have two people left to get Christmas gifts for and then I am DONE! What an excellent feeling!
Coming this week: Temps starting at work, giving out Christmas gifts, picking up the finished U Paint It items, hopefully finding out in the news about Caylee Anthony's remains, packing for Christmas travels next week OH! AND, the Lobos play in the State Finals Saturday in Waco!! I am trying to talk Bret into going since it is only a little over an hour from here. I haven't been to a Longview football game since I was a freshman at TAMU. I think it would be interesting to see them again - especially if the Lobos show up!
News Review
One thing that I do on a very regular basis is read the news - MSNBC to be exact. "Hi, my name is Katie and I am a news addict" - "Hi Katie!" So to recap what I am reading at this moment, Sunday, December 14th 7:29pm. Keep in mind there are a lot more interesting articles, these are just the things that caught my eye. I am aware that we all have different opinions and different beliefs so please, I apologize if articles that I like offend you, but this is my blog after all:
- "In Baghdad, Bush dodges a shoe attack" - This is a video I recommend all to watch. Where I never think that violence is the answer, I just find it amusing that this reporter really thought he was going to make a point by throwing his shoes at the President. Now, I am hoping he thought it was worth it and that he got the attention he wanted because he was surrounded and detained in 2.5 seconds and, my guess is, his feet were cold. I hope he doesn't get sick :/
- "'Meet the Press': Economic Advise for Obama" - I did not actually watch this video but I was excited to see 'Meet the Press.' I really liked Tim Russert, he seemed like a fantastically, beautiful opinionated man and I enjoyed Tom Brokaw on Meet the Press as well because he is so genuinely knowledgeable. But, now David Gregory has taken over as moderator for Meet the Press and that equally excites me. I was the Today Show on a daily basis and he is a regular on that show. I have come to respect David and I value his opinion. I am excited to see the good things he does for this show while staying respectful and true to the shows values. Mr. Gregory called the appointment “an incredible honor,” and promised to follow Mr. Russert’s advice to “hold leaders accountable.” He added, “It’s all about preparation” and said he would take on the job “with great purpose.”
- "Bradford's numbers speak for themselves" - I actually watched the ceremony Saturday night to see who would receive the Heisman trophy this year and I must say, I was very impressed with all three of the candidates. Bradford, McCoy and Tebow all seemed, to me, that they all three were just good, American men. Bradford talked about his love for all sports and there really didn't seem to be a single one he was not good at growing up. He has a strong love for his parents and his school and that speaks a lot about a person. Tebow, well, he is just one of the most amazing young men I have heard speak. He comes from a family of missionaries, has a tremendous and humble love for God which he openly speaks about and of course, he is an amazing football player. He won the Heisman last year as a sophomore and I do not think anyone would have been sad to see him win again this year. Then of course, Colt McCoy. I do not care if he is a Longhorn and I am not 'suppose' to like him, but I do. Again, he is just an all American guy who does a great job at representing our home state. All-in-all, I was very pleased with the candidates for the Heisman trophy and it is great to see such wonderful men at the top of their sport.
- "Obama's true colors: Black, white...or neither?" - This is an entire article devoted to the race of President Elect Obama. Several things are said from Obama directly talking about his status as a "mutt," how he is proud of who he is and how he identifies himself and how, "In 1903, W.E.B. DuBois said the question of the 20th century is the question of the color line, which is a simplistic black-white thing."..."This is the moment in the 21st century when we're stepping across that." I am not ashamed to say that I stand by Obama and I look forward to the things him and his cabinet are going to do for our country. Nothing good comes from being against your President, especially, in this moment, when there is nothing you can do to change things. This article makes me even more proud - Good for him. If this country should be teaching the children of the world anything - Do NOT back down from who you are. Know yourself and embrace that. Our country, I feel, needs a kick in the head sometime and needs to step back from some of its Victorian views and I feel Obama is going to help our country do that one day at a time. Even if it has to start with pointing out that he is biracial.
- "Police: Teacher Solicits Sex with Teen on Facebook" - It is articles like this that make me so thankful at times that I am not trying to raise a child right now. If you read the article you will find out that a former teacher at a boys school in Austin, Magnolia High School, was trying to get a 16-year-old boy to have sex with him over Facebook. The boy ended up telling his parents because he got scared. This is just tragic. Teachers are hired to inspire our children and to lead them in the right directions when parents are not always enough. Shame on this man.
- "T.O., Witten had to be separated" - Come on Cowboys! We have NO time for this. You are suppose to be working together to win games! Especially now if Romo's back is going to be bothering him! Get your act together T.O.
- "Aniston talks nude cover" - This is a video of Jennifer Aniston on the red carpet for Marley & Me and while yes, she talks about her GQ cover (where she looks amazing) the part that I fell in love with was with Nancy O'dell was talking to John Mayer. I think him and Jennifer are too cute and he was sweet talking about how he was there to support her and that is what you do for someone you love. Too cute.
- "Study firmly ties hormone use to breast cancer" - "Taking menopause hormones for five years doubles the risk for breast cancer, according to a new analysis..." I think it is comforting every time a new study helps us learn more not only about breast cancer, but all cancers. As we all know, cancer is so very deadly that any and all advancements that can be made are nothing but positive advancements. (side note, this is from San Antonio - way to go Texas!)
- "Run-in with a shark 'a terrifying experience'" - You don't say! If I had a run-in with a shark I am pretty sure A) I would turn into Jesus because I would be walking on water and B) I would be traumatized for life! This is a video that has been shown several times on the Today show and basically a shark got his head through one of those underwater cages where people go down in the ocean and look at sharks. I am sorry but you are just asking for it. Stay away from sharks! They are large and have sharp teeth - they will hurt you!
- "Week in Pictures" - this is a piece I recommend everyone who reads MSNBC to look at. Every week, at some point around Friday - Sunday, I look at this week in pictures. There are always such amazing pictures that are submitted from around the world and it is just so neat to see them all. My all time favorite piece on MSNBC. Then... Last but not least, to end on a festive note...
- "Best Places to Celebrate Christmas" -http://www.forbestraveler.com/luxury/celebrate-christmas-slide-1.html?partner=playlist&thisSpeed=25000 Enjoy!!
