discussion time for Jen!

My blogging buddy, Jen, recently left me a comment saying "so, i keep hearing about this "true blood" show... is it good??? i'm a twilighter so i don't know if i'd like it!" so I have decided to post my own comments about the differences between Twilight and True Blood and please, all my other buddies out there, please add more comments as well so we can help Jen decide if she will like True Blood or not.

Jen, this one's for you!
  • Twlight is more appropriate for younger readers/watchers while Charlaine Harris' books and True Blood is more for adults. There are some VERY adult scenes with miss Sookie Stackhouse (the main character).
  • Twilight and True Blood have two different approaches to Vampires so it is interesting to see the differences. For example, vampires can go out in the light in Twlight (or at least they can and not be hurt) where as they cannot (safely) in True Blood.
  • If you're intrigued by the vampire love story then you can probably be fans of both
  • True Blood is more dark with a LOT of blood, murder and some crazy stuff

What articles online have to say:

  • “True Blood’s” hold over “Twilight” is that television can go places that a book simply cannot. The power of online media and the depth of what a camera can capture knocks Meyer’s universe on its ass. Meyer can make her characters seem believable by explaining the depth of Edward and Bella’s love, and how far Carlisle and his family have gone to maintain peace and humanity. But where Meyer fails to gain a mature audience are her Mormon values. Her books are all about resistance while “True Blood” isn’t afraid to go all the way (and boy, do they!) However, in many ways I appreciate Meyer’s sense of modesty to the overt sexuality of “True Blood.” Maybe it’s a ‘why have the cow when you can get the milk for free’ thing? I like the cow. I like the free milk…er… blood, too.

Differences:

  • Twilight is aimed at a teenage audience
  • Characters are "high schoolers" in Twilight
  • Female character is very dependent on male vampire in Twilight
  • In Twilight, the mind reading is done by vampires, in True Blood, Sookie is the one that does the mind reading
  • Sookie doesn't want to become a vampire
  • There is also more sex and action in True Blood because it's audience is meant for the more mature
  • In True Blood, vampires are out of the closet and drink synthetic blood

Let me know opinions and your own comments please!
